User comments about Lo Coco's - Shattuck

"To be quite honest, Lo Coco's resturant is the next best thing to eating in Sicily yourself. The family style atmosphere is just what the doctor oredered. The staff is extremely personable and friendly. Gilberto Lo Coco is one of the most dedicated chef's Ive ever met. He puts his heart and soul into every dish and can give you a history lesson about Sicily on the drop of a dime. The Swordfish is pan seared to perfection in a sauce that makes my heart swell. The unusual combination of eggplant and pizza makes my tummy smile. I am a repeat offender!! " -- anonymous user, 07/04/2002

"Simply put, this Berkeley eatery is one of my favorite restaurants. A father/son estabishment, a lot of love's in the pizza and the entrees. The son came to our table to inquire about our meal. The calamari saute has the best sauce I've ever had--is it Triple Sec that gives it that smoky, haunting, slightly sweet complex flavor? (please, please give me the recipe)--I dream about this dish. Just the right ambience, light and bright with big windows, and lively with chatter, filled with UC Berkeley students and older folks, all happily chowing down on the creative Italian fare. Service was friendly, attentive. Meals come with the signature flatbread and there are a couple of nice salads to begin with--we split the salad with sun-dried tomatoes, currents, walnuts and blue cheese--yum! We liked the smooth, rich Chianti Classico with our meal of squid and Gnocchi stuffed with Gorgonzla--which my husband found strongly flavored--but delicious. He almost licked the plate. The price was reasonable for the quality--our bill was about $60, including tip, for splitting a salad, two entrees, bottle of wine. We were too full for dessert. LoCoco's like eating in the kitchen of your favorite uncle--if your uncle's a great chef from Sicily. A trip to Italy, closer to home. Pizza's are sublime. We keep going back.--Patricia Frank, Oakland California  2patlyn@patriciafrank.com , 09/05/2001

" In Italia è difficile mangiare  così bene, le linguine al pesto e lo "sfincione", insieme alla cortesia del personale, sono imbattibili!!!"
